Sustainability vs Reality in Mylar Bag Recycling

The conversation about sustainability has been more about ideals than about the reality of how sustainable practices actually work. Although there are many cities that have successful recycling systems, what works in one city does not necessarily translate well to another just as flexible packaging materials, such as Mylar bags, do not experience the same success throughout the country.

Flexible, reusable materials, such as Mylar, are some of the most effective ways to preserve food and reduce waste. Mylar has demonstrated that it adds a substantial amount of time for food preservation. In addition to extending a product's shelf-life, they also effectively protect a product's quality and prevent spoilage or waste from occurring. As a result, Mylar's benefits have been overlooked or are frequently left out of the much broader discussion of sustainability.

However, the disposal of these products, at the end of their life, is also very important. Recycling facilities, for example, frequently face challenges when it comes to processing layered materials. This, even though the components of layer materials can all be recycled.

It would seem that there is a tradeoff when it comes to product protection versus recyclability. By knowing about the tradeoff between product protection and recyclability, brands and consumers will make educated purchasing decisions rather than relying on preconceived ideas.

If you would like to see an accurate view of how Mylar bags fit into sustainable efforts in today's world, I encourage you to review the article on "Are Mylar Bags Recyclable?" It describes, honestly, both the advantages and disadvantages of using this type of packaging for food.
