The Hidden Costs Behind Custom Packaging Orders

Placing an order for the custom mylar bags may seem simple on the surface; you choose a design and size of the bag and place your order. Simple right? Not really...there is a whole layer of hidden mechanics affecting how many bags you’re required to order to start with.

Before production begins, machines have to be setup/dialed in, the films aligned, and the colors calibrated; seals tested. That setup phase is comprised of time, materials, and labor regardless of whether you are producing 50 bags or 5000 bags. This is why suppliers don't entertain ultra-low quantities - it simply does not make sense from an operational standpoint.

And then there is the use of materials. When a roll of film is cut, it is rarely done precisely to match the small orders being produced; there is always some excess, and there is almost always a level of waste for setup and trimming. When you produce larger quantities of bags, the waste component becomes smaller than smaller quantities of bags because you will have less total bags in which to split the waste among.

Also, the complexity of the design can lead to pushing the minimums higher. Metallic finishes, matte coatings, child-resistant zippers, etc. all add multiple layers to the production process. More layers require additional setup, and the increased setup often results in increasing the minimum quantity just for the sake of operating efficiently.

What most people fail to realize is that the MOQs are not intended to limit customers; rather they are a way to protect the flow of work through production. Without the MOQs in place, the costs would be unpredictable, timelines would be extended, and consistency would be lost. The structure of MOQs is what keeps everything behind the scene flowing smoothly and efficiently.

If you are trying to work through the minimums and what makes sense for your brand, you should research how the minimums are actually calculated. This guide breaks it down into simple terms: What Are the Minimum Order Quantities for Custom Mylar Bags.

Once you understand the reasons behind the numbers, you no longer see the minimums as an obstacle, but rather as a function of a system that creates consistent, scalable, and possible packaging.
