From Basic to Strategic: Rethinking Mylar Bag Types

Many brands select their initial packaging based on what seems to be the easiest option, typically something that is easy to create, fast to produce, or something that ‘works for the time being’. This may be fine for an initial period of time; however, as time passes, this initial packaging option will begin to impede the success of the brand in ways that may not be obvious.

Different types of Mylar bags have been designed to solve different problems. For example, a box bottom bag will create a sturdy and stable foundation thus giving the bag the feel of a rigidly packaged product rather than a flexible one, thus creating a distinct impression or perception of value and quality for the product contained within the bag.

Side gusset bags are designed to provide additional volume by expanding with the addition of product while maintaining an acceptable level of footprint in relation to the volume of product contained in the bag making them a very cost-effective alternative for packaging products that require volume yet require to be relatively compact in size.

Heat seal bags provide a certain degree of any required product sealing for tamper and freshness purposes and that are meant to remain sealed for long periods of time while resealable bags provide an option for repeat usage of the bag contents.

Similarly, small format products such as sachets or pillow pouches are not only commonly overlooked but can prove to be extremely beneficial for sampling and acquiring customers. In many cases, single use packages are what cause a consumer to try a product.

Finishing and material selections affect packaging by combining both finishing and material elements to create a specific desired result. For example, matte finishes provide a more soft and contemporary finish while gloss or metallic finishes create more eye-catching finishes; whereas Kraft materials provide a more natural feel. All of these finishing and material options create textural and tactile differences that help create a particular perception of the brand to an end user.

Once packaging is considered as a strategic option rather than merely a placeholder for products, a brand's success will dramatically improve.
