Preparing Food Before Sealing It in Mylar Bags

To get the longest storage life from mylar bags, one must prepare before they pack the food in the bags as preparation can greatly affect how long the food will last once packed. If you don't take these steps during preparation, you could negate some of the advantages of using high quality packing materials.

Before packing dried foods in a Mylar bag, make sure that your food is dry and free of moisture; any moisture left behind can cause mold or spoilage after time passes. Additionally, many foods can benefit from being frozen before packing in order to kill off insect eggs, etc. Measuring out the appropriate portion of food to go into each Mylar bag allows for accurate use of the oxygen absorber to promote long-term food longevity.

Another critical step in the packaging process is labeling each bag according to food type, packing date and expected shelf life. When food is clearly labeled, it is easier to keep track of the items that are on rotation.

A complete overview on food prep, use of oxygen absorbers and sealing methods is provided in our How to Store Food in Mylar Bags: Step by Step Guide, covering each part of the process in easy to follow detail.
