Key Elements of Successful Mylar Bag Design

When considering how to design Mylar bags, you must take into consideration functional design along with your creative design. Although the visual appeal of your design is important, you also must have a functional pouch that performs correctly throughout the entire production process (including shipping and storage) no matter what conditions it encounters. Therefore, businesses must have a good understanding of how each of these elements works together to form a functionally and beautifully packaged product.

The design process for a pouch generally begins with determining the best type of pouch to use. Retailers usually prefer using stand-up pouches because they display better on store shelves; however, in some cases, using flat pouches might be more appropriate based on the size or weight of the product inside. The type of structure selected at this stage greatly influences the design layout of the incoming artwork.

The next step of the design is to develop artwork that conveys the brand. Most designers utilize the existing graphic elements of a brand (e.g., color palette, graphics, typography, etc.) to create their designs and utilize Mylar's ability to support high-resolution printed images to add to the level of detail of the artwork and to increase the branding appeal. Mylar allows for the printing of high-quality images with the use of full-color and full-bleed illustrations, among other things, which helps to create a visually attractive design and provides vivid colors in the final product.

Keeping functionality in mind during the development of the design is critical. Specific features of the Mylar pouch (e.g., resealable zipper, tear notch, hang hole) will impact where the design elements (i.e., image and text) will be placed when positioned on the pouch. This will also assist with keeping the more important elements of design visible while not being interfered with or removed from the design.

An additional method of designing a Mylar pouch is to create the pouch dieline. A dieline is a graphic representation of the intended cut lines, fold lines and seal lines of the pouch within the manufacturing process. It assists designers in ensuring that the design fits correctly in the physical structure of the pouch.
